George Bush Fails to Cast Dispersion

I just wonder if George W misheard George H W when his Dad told him he should get himself an occupation.

He didn’t mean you should go and occupy another country, George!

Recently George W Bush met with a number of “sympathetic” “journalists” in the oval office. The discussion was wide-ranging but not always clear, so I have unpacked it here for you, with occasional tidbits of advice for George:

Other parts of the world, and some here – and I’m not casting dispersion, I’m just giving you a sense – I’m telling you what’s on my mind.”

Now, George, it might take me a bit of work to unpack this, so give me a minute, please….

Um…….Nope. Sorry, can’t help.

What I thought I would do is talk a little bit, share my mind with you, and then answer questions for a while.

Wait - it’s a most generous offer but is there enough of your mind to go around?

I see the threat, and will use American power to protect ourselves, and at the same time, try to create the first victory in this ideological – the first victories – in the ideological war of the 21st century.

What ideologies could those be, George? Killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people because you see phantoms and hear “god” voices in your head?

So, much of the thinking and decision-making that I do now is based upon my belief that we’re in this grand ideological struggle. It is a struggle between moderate people, and a struggle between ideologues who are totalitarian and kill to achieve an objective without conscience.

George it’s pretty clear who are the ideologues who are totalitarian and kill to achieve an objective without conscience. But who are the “moderate people”?

Perhaps George’s advisors are reading him O’Sullivan! ‘O’Sullivan believed that God (”Providence”) had given the United States a mission to spread republican democracy (”the great experiment of liberty”)…O’Sullivan believed that Manifest Destiny was a moral ideal (a “higher law”) that superseded other considerations.’ - ‘And that claim is by the right of our manifest destiny to overspread and to possess the whole of the continent which Providence has given us for the development of the great experiment of liberty and federated self-government entrusted to us.’

There’s that idealism again.

‘A long line of critics…suggested that advocates of Manifest Destiny were citing “Divine Providence” for justification of actions that were motivated by chauvinism and self-interest.’

And they’re coming. And we’ve got to do everything we can to stop them.

The Muslims are coming! The Musliims are coming!

Iraq is the central part of this global war right now.

It’s a global war!

The extremists, radicals have made it clear that they want us to leave.

Democrats!

You know, it’s an interesting world in which people are not willing to listen to the words of an enemy, but in this case, we’re able to listen to the enemy and find out what the enemy thinks and publish their thoughts.

There’s a difference, George, between listening and hearing. And there’s a difference between people who think you’re a dangerous lunatic and terrorists. There are laws about eavesdropping, George.

The good news is, is that we’ve severely hurt them. My strategy, from day one, was to go on the offense, stay on the offense, and keep the pressure on them until we are able to bring as many to justice as possible.

George, justice is justice. Retribution is retribution. They are not the same thing. Dropping bombs on Baghdad was not as you once said, “delivering justice”. It was revenge for what someone else entirely had done. You have not brought Saddam Hussein to justice. You have extracted retribution. His trial was never fair and just, even if it reached the correct verdict. You know, “justice must not only be done; it must be seen to be done”.

Murder is the tool of some, revenge is the tool of others.

Murder is the tool of you, George. Murder is the killing of innocents. You have done that to the tune of somewhere between 100,000 and 1,000,000 people.

Revenge is the tool of you, George. Revenge is what Iraq was, as you have repeatedly said. The terrorists attacked the World Trade Centre on 11 September 2001 and (so) you attacked Iraq:

I believe when you get attacked and somebody declares war on you, you fight back. And that’s what we’re doing.

Have you heard the term non sequitur, George?

And in this different kind of war, the propaganda of the enemy is brutal and effective, and it upsets Americans because we value life.

If Americans value life, George, they would not have voted to murder somewhere between 100,000 and 1,000,000 innocent people.

This [Iraq] is a sovereign government. This was elected by the people. As fragile as it is, it is a government of the Iraqi people, which we’ve got to honor.

…worse luck…in fact:

Well, it’s a sovereign government…You work with the sovereign government to develop a way forward that’s got enough pressure on them to move, but at the same time, they’re comfortable with. Look, if we wanted to, we could put so much pressure on the Maliki government to topple it.

My only point to you is, is that I view this Iraq conflict as obviously incredibly vital for our immediate security.

Protecting this country is the number-one issue.

Pity the country is officially less safe as a result of your adventures, eh, George?

…but I also understand this kind of battle that’s taking place in Iraq as a part of a larger struggle that we’re just going to have to deal with. .

Mein Kampf, mein Fuehrer?

I view this as a struggle of good versus evil, by the way.

“Good” = (born again) Christian, “Evil” = Muslim

I don’t think religious people murder. I think people are misusing religion to justify their murder.

I think you are misusing religion to justify their murder, George. And I think for most of history only “religious” people have murdered on this scale. Evil, stupid, criminal people like you, George.

Maybe it’s not nuanced enough for some of the thinkers and all that stuff…

Damned thinkers! Last thing we want is people thinking! What do they use to think with, their heads? What’s wrong with their guts? That’s what I use.

I’ve worked rope lines and the wife says, I’m emailing my husband after the event. I said, tell her the commander – tell him the Commander-in-Chief respects him – send – and all of a sudden the guy – wow, Mom, I saw the President. It is amazing when there is that direct communication.

So that’s clear. That’s direct communication if ever I saw it.

…you know, life is moving. People are living their lives…

…and then quite suddenly dying…

…schools are opening.

The Bechtel/Halliburton schools and hospitals, George? How are those going? How are the kickbacks going for Cheney? How many have you actually built of all the schools and hospitals you promised and Halliburton contracted (and has been paid) for? How many are still needed?

And it – and yet, this is a war that you don’t measure platoons storming hills. You measure – evidently, the measurement is violence.

By God,George! What a surprise! “Evidently the measure is violence”. In a war, George! My, that IS a shock.

The frustration is that the definition of success has now gotten to be, how many innocent people are dying?

I don’t know what you’re worried about, George! You’re a runaway winner on that definition!

There is a criminal element in Iraq, as well, that the government is going to have to deal with. There is a vacuum, and into vacuum moved criminals.

That’s right, George. The criminal element in Iraq is called “Halliburton” and “Bechtel”. And “elements of the U.S. Armed Forces”. And they moved into the vacuum created by……? Wait, don’t tell me……by you, George!

One of the stories – interesting stories I tell is about the fellow that came here. He got kidnapped and he was rescued pretty early by our Delta team. I said, what’s it like to be kidnapped, man? It must have been weird.

Golly gee, that is an interesting story, George! “Weird”, huh, George? Couldn’t you have tried to be a llittle more insensitive and shallow? The bloke’s probably not up to such a deep discussion.

You’re right, it’s the perception that this great military power full of decent people is just getting picked off and nothing is happening.

I’m sure that there are decent people in the US armed forces, George. It’s just that they’re not at the top.

The Seniora – bolstering, helping the Seniora government is in this country’s interests and it’s a priority. Why? Because we want young democracies that are fragile to take root in the Middle East.

What we want is “fragile democracies”. They’re easier to push around. But you have to admire the way you bolstered the Seniora government by encouraging the Israelis rape southern Lebanon, bomb civilian areas of Beirut and drop cluster bombs in inhabited areas after the ceasefire, George. That’s proper “bolstering”. It will be in all the international relations textbooks, now.

And I’m trying to figure out a matrix that says things are getting better.

Yup, pardner, you just work out a spin that makes you look as if you’re winning something. Actually, no, don’t bother, it would take too long and you’ve got better things to do, like kill people.

And people say, well, it’s because – you’re only trying to avoid failure. No, quite the contrary. I am trying to show success.

George, the contrary of “avoiding failure” is either facing failure or avoiding success. And you’re doing both brilliantly!

Look, I’m not looking for sympathy – it’s a volunteer job.

And you should be paid accordingly.

The President must think strategically in order to achieve objectives, and you just have to. Anyway, you’re going to get – out of this, I hope you come away with, these are the strategic thoughts about how to solve problems; how he sees the world, where it’s headed, where it could head, and what he’s doing to do something about it.

Is that clear?

Look, here’s what I want you to do. I want you to go away with here’s what the guy’s thinking. You either like it or don’t like it, but at least it gives you a sense for how I’m strategizing.

George, the last thing you want is for people find out how you’re “thinking”. We’re panicked enough already.

We ought to do this more often.

We should do this less often.
